The Michael J Baker Classic Wrestling Tourney always hits the mark; Great Competition, plenty of teams and wrestlers, great concessions and one of the best venues in Vermont! The Essex High School gym is huge and the flexible stanchions allow for a multitude of arrangements to accommodate various types of tournaments.
One difference (and for me as well as many others) was the absence of “The Venerable Voice of Vermont Wrestling” and namesake for the tourney; one Michael J Baker. While we’re happy that he’s not fighting inclement weather and sometimes (maybe most times) horrendous travel conditions, we still miss the VWCA former “El Supremo”.
In spite of the absence of the former Vermont “Wrestling Godfather”, the 2020 MJB rocked and the action was furious. The impending weather didn’t stop 25 teams from doing battle at the annual brawl. Essex just narrowly missed taking home the bacon; they ended up only 19 points behind 1st place Timberlane. The hornets have a host of talented wrestlers this year and look to put the challenge to the “Perennial Powerhouse” MAU at the state tourney.
One of those wrestlers, James Danis captured the OW by pinning his way through the bracket. His longest bout was the final in which he took out Cooper Kelly of Timberlane at 2:55 in the first period. Both wrestlers had pinned their way to the final and it looked to be a barn burner of a Final….I guess ‘Wrecking Crew’ Danis had other ideas!
