Norwich University Hosts All Academy Wrestling Tournament
Saturday, Jan. 26th, Norwich University hosted the prestigious All Academy Wrestling Tournament. This is the first time in the 25 year history of the tournament that Norwich has hosted!
“The All-Academy tournament is a one of a kind tournament and wrestling is the only NCAA sport with an opportunity like this,” Norwich wrestling head coach Alex Whitney said. “It is an honor to host it for the first time on our campus and know that it will be an amazing opportunity for the Norwich and Vermont community to see such a high level of wrestling on our campus.”
This is the first time in the 200 year history of NU that all of the Military Institutes will be on campus competing at the same time. “We are extremely excited to be hosting the All-Academy Championships here at Norwich University and to have such prestigious military institutions on our campus,” Director of Athletics Tony Mariano stated
And once again, D1 powerhouse Navy dominated the tourney claiming titles in 5 of the 10 weight classes and garnering 115.5 team points. Air Force followed with 99.5 and Army was on their heels with 72.5. Neal Richards, 174 for VMI received The Most Outstanding Wrestler award, while Randy Meneweather, of Air Force, had the most falls of the tournament.
NU’s Cameron Smith and Daniel were the outstanding performers for the home team with victories in the consolation bracket.
Not About The Brass Ring
While NU didn’t fare as well as they would have liked, it’s not all about the trophies that make this event significant. “This is an event that makes you a better wrestler” Coach Whitney exclaimed. “Last year we wrestled much better after this tournament.”
Let us not forget that NU is a little fish in a big pond facing the likes of 5 D1 heavyweights. “Just to have that caliber of wrestling here in Vermont is significant and has never happened before!” Vermont Wrestler is proud to have been a guest at the event. “This is what we need more of, to take wrestling to the next level in Vermont” Claims Steve Cerrone Editor of VW. “I can’t wait to see this happen again”!
More to come this week.
