2018 Vermont Wrestling State Varsity Championship Recap
The 2018 Vermont Wrestling State Varsity Wrestling Championships at Otter Valley Union High School, in Brandon Vermont are almost a distant memory, however this end of the year two day competition of the best of the best, held some inevitable outcomes, some upsets some unexpected surprises. I know it has been a little over a month. For me, as I think for some of you, the memory of those two days is still vivid in my mind.
The championship matches were held under the lights on the center mat to a crowd of over 500 people. In the 106 Lb. weight class Ben Stewart from Essex High School faced Luke Bliss of Mt. Mansfield High School. Ben Stewart prevailed by pinfall.
In the 113 Lb. weight class Lucas Saunders from Compass School was matched against the 2017 State Champion Hunter Verge of St. Johnsbury Academy. Verge won the match by pinfall.
At 120 Lbs. Noah Bonning of Essex wrestled Josh Hanlon from Williamstown. Noah Bonning won the match by pinfall.
In the 126 Lb. weight class Calvin Leo of Essex faced Keenan Taylor from MAU. Keenan Taylor pinned Leo for the win. At 132 Lbs. 2017 Vermont State Champion Roman Mayer from Mt. Abe faced Noah Call of MAU. Noah Call won the match by major decision 16-8.
In the 138 Lb. Weight class Lakes Region High School’s Josh Roberts wrestled against Gage McLaughlin of MAU. Gage McLaughlin won over Roberts by pinfall at the 31 second mark.
At 145 Lbs. 2017 Vermont State Champion Keegan Coon of MAU faced Spaulding’s Hunter Quero. Keegan Coon prevailed over Quero by pinfall.
In the 152 Lb. weight class Tyler Burgess of MAU wrestled against Justin Bissonette from CVU. MAU’s Tyler Burgess won by decision 3-0.
For the 160 Lb. weight class, Rutland’s Dakota Peters took on Seth Carney from Essex. Dakota Peters won the match by decision 9-6.
At 170 Lbs. Jack Carney of Essex faced off against Colby Giroux from Mt. Mansfield. Jack Carney and Giroux went the distance, but Carney prevailed, winning by decision 9-7.
In the 182 Lb. match James Danis of Essex took on Chris Mayer from MAU. In a close match, James Danis eventually won by decision 3-2.
At 195 Lbs., MAU Sam Wilkins wrestled against Ryan Walbridge of Spaulding. Sam Wilkins prevailed winning by decision 6-2.
The 220 Lb. match was a short one. Milton’s Nick Johnson faced Colin Crowley from MAU. Nick Johnson pinned Crowley for the win in just 33 seconds.
For the 285 Lb. weight class, Hunter Ladd of St. Johnsbury Academy wrestled MAU’s Calvin Hayford. Calvin Hayford won the match over Ladd by decision 4-2.
Top ten team honors go like this: In First Place with team total of 274.50 points is Mount Anthony Union High School. Second place went to Essex High School with 168 points. In Third Place were the Hilltoppers from St. Johnsbury Academy with 120.50 points. Mt. Abraham Union High School earned a Fourth Place spot at with 105.50 points. Spaulding High School, in Barre placed Fifth 69 points. Champlain Valley Union School came in Sixth place close behind Spaulding, with Milton High School in Seventh, right on their heels at 66.Points. Mt. Mansfield High School finished eighth with 63.5 points, Fair Haven Union High School following in Ninth with 43 points. Rounding out the top ten spots was Rutland Union School who ended the two days earning 41 team points. Vermont Wrestler congratulates all the schools on their fine performance in this year’s event. Congratulations on the 30th consecutive team win for Mount Anthony who advanced nine wrestlers to the finals and ultimately ending the day with seven Champions. High praise also goes to second place team finisher Essex High School, who realized their best outcome at the Vermont championship tournament in the twelve years Ira Isham has headed their wrestling program. Both Isham and Mount Anthony Coach Brian Coon were awarded 2018 Coaches of the Year, to put the proverbial icing on the cake.
Congratulations to all of the wrestlers and coaches! 2017-2018 been a fantastic season of wrestling in Vermont. The best is yet to come just wait and see!
