Vermont Wrestling; Dustin Down Under

Vermont Wrestling; Dustin Down UnderMiddlebury’s Dustin Davio has been making waves all year and making his presence known. An outstanding year for the 138 pounder, Dustin moved up the ranks and finished 2nd in the State Finals. When it comes to Dustin, expect the unexpected.

For wrestlers, (like any sport) the path to improvement lies in your off season dedication.  To that end, plenty of wrestlers go away for summer wrestling camps and competition. Some to local clinics and leagues, some to neighboring states, and then some as far away as Ohio. Well Dustin has them all beat….he’s wrestling this summer on THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WORLD. You heard it right, he’ll be traveling to the other side of the globe and “Wrestling Down Under”.

Dustin was invited to wrestle for the Vermont East Conference Team as part of the ‘DownUnder’ Sports program. He will spend 9 days in Australia wrestling teams from  Austria and New Zealand…and you guessed it…Australia.  There will be individual matches, team duals and a king of the beach event while traveling around Brisbane competing. After competition is complete the team will travel to Hawaii for some down time and sight seeing, learning about the life style and visiting Pearl Harbor.

A Wrestler At Heart

Dustin’s Dad introduced him to wrestling, but didn’t give it the hard sell. (He also coached Dustin through 6th grade) Naturally, being a wrestler

Young and Ambitious

himself, Dave would have loved to see Dustin follow in his footsteps, but left the choice totally up to him. In retrospect, a pretty good strategy. Dustin took to wrestling like a duck to water! He started his career at the age of 5 winning the Bennington northeast challenge in his first year…and striving to be the best wrestler he could be.

Over the years Dustin committed to wrestling, doing off season camps and clinics through Middlebury’s programs k-5th grade. His 6th grade year he wanted to try something else…so along came basketball; THAT didn’t last long and that’s also when he determined he’s a wrestler at heart – loves the comp – loves the challenge. He likes to play football in the fall;  a sport he enjoys but more importantly, keeps up his strength and conditioning regimen.

He wrestled in Junior High placing both years. As a freshman, he wrestled 126lbs where he became JV state champ and competed varsity all season being eliminated from varsity states due to a skin issue the second day. Sophomore year he wrestled hard all season placing 6th at 132. This year he wrestled 138, was named team captain, and set goals of 25 wins, placing in the top 3 and going to New England’s. He finished the year eclipsing all of his goals; a 33-9 record only losing to 1 in state wrestler. He beat the #2 seed placing second at Vermont states and making it to new England’s.

Dustin is currently an assistant in the Middlebury youth wrestling program as a means to give back  while waiting for off season clinics and clubs to begin. He also plans to attend clinics at Castleton, wrestling with the Middlebury club and attending as many clinics around the state as possible.

A Little Help From His Friends

He leaves July 9th flying to LA to meet up with rest of team. He then flies to Australia until the 17th, following that, Hawaii for 3 days. As you can imagine, a trip like this is very expensive and Dustin has raised most of the money thus far, but he’s still a little short of his goal.
Please consider helping Dustin reach his goal for this “Once in a lifetime” venture.
Help Dustin to go Down Under and with it a FREE CHANCE at winning a trip to Hawaii!
