Vergennes Union High School hosts Middle School and Varsity Wrestling Tournament January 27th, 2018.
Middle School Wrestlers and High School Wrestlers convened this past Saturday to test their skill on the mats in Vergennes, Vermont. It was a cool crisp day, but it was warm inside the two gymnasiums. Unofficially there were over two hundred grapplers taking part. Although the number of wrestlers that had originally signed up for the tournament was slightly higher, more like two hundred eighty or so. Some teams in Vermont, and all over the United States have been battling sickness, especially the flu. This is the likely reason for the decreased numbers attending the Vergennes Tournament on Saturday. Even Coaches have found themselves on the illness list. Tournament officials did some last minute organizing, rearranging some match ups and adding scratches, to make things work relatively smooth throughout the day.
There were high school teams from New York travelling as much as three hours to compete on three mats in this northern Vermont tournament. Some of these wrestling teams even came to Vergennes the night before, so they could be ready and refreshed in time for check in. I spoke with a parent of one of these New York wrestlers, they told me that they had started out at 5:00 in the morning to arrive in time to see their son wrestle. And I am sure it was worth it, as the wrestling was stellar. South Glens Falls, Massena, Northern Adirondack High School, Ogdensburg High Schools were in attendance among several high school teams from around Vermont. Among the Vermont Teams in attendance there were Springfield, Vergennes, Essex, Harwood, Mill River, Rutland, Milton, Spaulding, Mount Mansfield, Mount Abraham all giving a great performance on the day.
