HPIM0003SPRING COACHES MEETING; HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING UNIFORM CHANGES

Please read carefully – Critical Info!

Summary of VWCA meeting on May 23, 2017 @ Randolph Union HS
Head coaches present:  Brian Coon–Mt. Anthony, Scott Shaddock–Fair Haven, Chris Mandigo–Lake Region, Darren Omeara–Spaulding, Lee Tyminski–Mill River, Phil Bidwell–Milton, Jeremi Lyford–Randolph, Harley Brown–Mt. Mansfield, Ira Isham–Essex, Cole Mason–Otter Valley, Casey Moulton–Harwood, Ethan Raymond–Middlebury, Nick Mayer–Mt. Abe, & Don Beebe–Springfield.  Several assistant coaches were also present as well as Lori & Wayne Ring from Hurricane Wrestling (Hinesburg).  Vermont Wrestler web site was represented by Steve Cerrone & Melissa Brown.
1.  Year-in-Review & Financial statement were presented.  Year-in-Review document summarizes the 2016-2017 wrestling season in regards to League Championships (MVL & NVAC), JV/Jr. HS state tournament, State tournament, & New England tournament.  Also included are new members of the 100 & 200 wins club, New England place winners, & Coach-of-the-Year.  Financial statement details all financial activity of the VWCA from May 23, 2016 thru May 23, 2017.  We currently have a balance of $3,083.38 (varsity & jv).  The Jr. HS currently has a balance of $ $200.26
2.  A GREAT presentation was made by Vermont Wrestler.  Steve & Melissa went over how to use the web site & a need for as much information as coaches can supply.  They need your help!!!  These people work VERY hard to expose VT wrestling and are not getting all the cooperation they need from coaches.  If you don’t participate, your wrestlers will be the ones that suffer!!!!  Steve & Melissa suggested that you as a coach get someone in your wrestling “community” to serve as a media rep for your team–this will relieve you of being the sole contributor for your team.  One of the things I hear from you coaches all the time is about lack of publicity for wrestling in VT–well Vermont Wrestler is committed to making VT wrestling heard about, not just in VT, but nation wide.  PLEASE HELP VERMONT WRESTLER ACCOMPLISH THEIR MISSON!!!!!  Check the web site out regularly–like at least a couple times a week out of season and daily during the season.

5.  Coaching certification requirements were reviewed–see your AD for guidelines.
6.  Brandon Cousino from Vergennes was selected as 2016-2017 Vermont Wrestler of the Year.
7.  Misc. items
     a.  I will work on a more efficient way of doing skin checks @ state tournament.  Great suggestion by Scott Shaddock was to have wrestlers weigh-in first & then go thru
          skin check process.
     b.  Discussion about weigh-in procedure for events during the week–was decided to continue current weigh-in procedure.
     c.  Discussed legal mat set-up for duals & tournaments–refer to rule book for set-up
     d.  Discussion about “independent” wrestlers.  I would suggest that any independent wrestlers attempt to coop with a school–this way they can be members of a team
and score for said team.  If wrestlers wish to remain independent they only way they can get varsity matches is by entering a varsity tournament–any other matches
wrestled would be considered exhibition matches.
     e.  Scott Shaddock made a presentation about 2 wrestling camps @ Castleton University
      f.  Jon Ashley (asst. coach @ Middlebury) will head up the Scholarship Committee once again.  You previously received an email from me about the process for
securing a scholarship to attend a wrestling camp in VT.  DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS IS JUNE 16th
     g.  I announced that the 50th VT state wrestling tournament will be @ Essex in 2019.  I have been involved with wrestling in VT since 1968 & this will be my final event
(actually it will the New England tournament the following week), as I will be stepping away from all my responsibilities in regards to wrestling (I will remain as a
member of the VPA wrestling committee).  It’s time for someone younger to take over my position.
     h.  Fall coaches meeting will be October 22, 2017 @ Castleton University.  This will be same set-up as last October–all wrestling coaches groups will meet, wrestling
officials will meet, & there will be a clinic & tournament for wrestlers.

NFHS ‘LEGAL UNIFORM’ PRESS RELEASE – BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU PURCHASE

As stated below are the HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING UNIFORM CHANGES – All coaches, managers, wrestlers and parents; please take note that you must have a school issued, compliant uniform. Don’t go buy a product that might be labeled ‘new wrestling uniform’.  We’re not sure how strict officials will be with the ruling but I wouldn’t take a chance on a DQ because of a uniform!

A Press Release From the NFHS announces the Alternate New Uniform and Other Rule Changes!

Read below for an explanation of the HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING UNIFORM CHANGES.

Recently the NFHS released a Wrestling Press Release regarding the rules changes for the sport of Wrestling that become effective for 2017-18 school year; however, that Press Release does not include ALL of the language for the new rules changes.  (Press Release is attached)  One of those rules changes that the NFHS Wrestling Rules Committee has worked on for the past two years is relative to what constitutes a “Legal Uniform”.  The rules committee has worked on a rules change that would allow for another option for a legal uniform other than the traditional singlet.  I am pleased to communicate to you that there will be a new rule change in place beginning with the 2017-18 wrestling season related to what constitutes a “legal uniform” for the sport of Wrestling.  Specifically, the new rule change to NFHS Rule 4-1-1(a-c) still permits the traditional “singlet”; however, it also permits the use of two piece uniform that consists of a “form-fitted compression shirt” and “shorts designed for wrestling”.

HIGH SCHOOL WRESTLING UNIFORM CHANGES

Please be advised that the NFHS Press Release “does not” contain ALL of the new language and specifications for the permissible “legal uniform”, specifically as related to the “shorts designed for wrestling” portion of the new rule.  The NFHS Press Release only states that “shorts designed for wrestling” must have a minimum of a 4 inch inseam; however, there are more requirements in the language of this new rule than simply having a 4 inch inseam. In short, DO NOT purchase what you believe are “shorts designed for wrestling” simply based on the Press Release.  Also, please note that we will never refer to “fight shorts” or “board shorts” when discussing what meets the requirments for “shorts designed for wrestling”.  The NFHS Rules Committee met with Wrestling Manufacturers and specifically addressed the requirements and specifications that “shorts designed for wrestling” must meet.
For those of you who are interested in purchasing and using the two piece uniform option that is now defined as a legal uniform for both middle school and high school Wrestling, please make sure to thoroughly review the new language and information below regarding NFHS Wrestling Rule 4-1-1(a-c), Legal Uniforms, that will be in effect beginning with the 2017-2018 Wrestling season.  If your school chooses to use the new optional uniform consisting of a form-fitted compression shirt and “shorts designed for wrestling”, please make sure that you are indeed purchasing product that meets all specifications for “shorts designed for wrestling” and that the company/manufacturer you are ordering from understands the difference between “short designed for wrestling” and what some will try to refer to as “fight shorts” or “board shorts”.  It is highly recommended that you use vendors/manufacturers that are specifically set up to specialize in the designing and manufacturing of legal “shorts designed for wrestling”.
NFHS RULE 4-1-1(a-c): A legal uniform consist of:
a.            a one-piece singlet shall be cut no lower in the back or front than the level of the armpits and under the arms no lower than one-half the distance between the armpit and the belt line.  The one-piece singlet may be worn with full-length tights with stirrups. Any other undergarment worn under the one-piece singlet which extends beyond the inseam shall be a tight-fitting, a single solid color, unadorned and shall not extend below the knee.  The one-piece singlet shall be shall be school-issued.
Note: Female contestants wearing a one-piece singlet shall wear a suitable under garment that covers their breasts.
b.            compression shorts or shorts designed for wrestling shall have a minimum 4-inch inseam that shall not extend below the knee; Shorts designed for wrestling shall have an elastic waistband and a drawstring that is not exposed.  Compression shorts or shorts designed for wrestling shall not have exposed drawstrings, belt loops, zippers, snaps, buttons, or pockets.  A suitable under garment which completely covers the buttocks and groin area must be worn under shorts designed for wrestling.  Shorts designed for wrestling may be worn over the singlet.  Compression shorts or shorts designed for wrestling may be worn with a form-fitted compression shirt.  Compression shorts or shorts designed for wrestling shall be school-issued.
c.             a form-fitted compression shirt which shall not cover or extend below the elbow and shall have a minimum 3-inch tail; The form-fitted, compression shirt may be worn under a singlet or with compression short or shorts designed for wrestling. The form-fitted compression shirt shall be school-issued.
NOTE: Female contestants wearing a form-fitted compression shirt shall wear a suitable under garment that covers their breasts.
Rationale: The alternate 2-piece uniform has been added to increase participation for boys and girls. The uniform modification received favorable support on the NFHS 2016 wrestling questionnaire. However, the NFHS Rules Review Committee had initial concerns that there was not enough product to meet the need of the schools that wanted to use the 2-piece uniform and asked that the NFHS Wrestling Rules Committee seek opinion from uniform manufacturers. After meeting with every major wrestling uniform manufacturer during the 2017 NFHS Wrestling Rules Committee meeting, the committee was assured that there would be enough product available to meet our criteria. In addition, a member state association experimented with a 2-piece uniform this past wrestling season and received favorable results and comments from their member schools, wrestlers, coaches and referees.
Please forward / share with your Middle School and HS wrestling coaches in your state.
Respectfully,
Barry Chooljian – NH
