The Old School Wrestling Club had it’s second and final clinic for the fall session last Sunday. This clinic featured the Norwich Wrestling Staff; Head Coach Alex Whitney and his Assistant Conner Keating (Harwood Union). The Essex wrestling room was full with wrestlers ranging from beginners to New England Champs.
Coach Keating started the session off with a warm up he picked up while completing in Bulgaria. The dynamic warm-up featured flexibility, direction change and speed. From there Coach Whitney took the reigns and broke down how to put your opponent out of position so you can attack. He emphasized using change of direction, with set-ups such as Russian 2 on 1, Arm Drags, Head Smash, etc. Moving into finishes such as single and double legs, along with upper body throws. He showed some competitive fun drills to practice these situations and to learn at full speed. After a short break Coach Keating took the mat discussed and showed his shuffle step to attack. It was magical how Coach Keating’s presentation flowed with Coach Whitney’s. (You could tell these two have worked together for a long time.) They closed the clinic out with some two minute live drills and questions.
Wrestlers from MMU, Colchester Cobras, Vergennes, Hinesburg and Essex participated.
