Barre, Vermont Youth Wrestling Tournament 3/11/17
Yesterday, 3/11/17 was the site for another Vermont Youth Wrestling Tournament. Host/Ref/Emcee/Tourney Organizer, Dave Fournier wore several of the hats as Host/Emcee during the fast paced and well run tourney that brought back memories for me of my son’s youth wrestling days. What really struck me the most were two things. First was the amount of female wrestlers in the tournament. Second was the nurturing and comforting of wrestlers rather than the more brusque atmosphere of the older groups.
Our sport needs to encourage and embrace these two elements of wrestling. We need to bring more wrestlers to the sport and we need to keep them wrestling through high school. Having kids enjoy what they do makes it all that much better. We’ve seen some programs flourish and some fade, but overall the amount of programs participating seems to be up.
Just recently, Cathy Resmer of Vt. Kids Magazine about the program at Colchester, run by Scott McPherson and Jason LaVoie. Both Cathy’s son and daughter are wrestling in the program and the numbers are on the rise. The coaches want the kids to progress and wrestle in the high school program and numbers are on the rise. Check out the article written from a mother’s point of view and see why the “Mat Rats” do what we do!
At this stage of the game, for some it’s the competition and progressing as a wrestler, for others, it’s a new experience and possibly their first foray into the world of youth wrestling. It’s not about the win/loss at this point, it’s about learning the sport and having a coach that cares about youth development and not statistics.
